Job Description

Utilidata is a fast-growing energy technology company that is digitizing the grid edge to unleash the full potential of clean energy. Our industry-leading software solutions accelerate clean energy, make the electric distribution grid more efficient, and strengthen system resiliency. Without real-time software solutions like ours, the distribution grid will be unable to support the clean energy transition or widespread electrification. We are advocating for state policies and utility regulations that redefine the role of software in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and incentivize investments in future-proof solutions.

We are expanding our diverse team of experts and looking for a senior-level team member to lead our state-based advocacy and regulatory campaigns. The position requires experience in the energy industry, ideally with innovative and disruptive technologies. This individual will be responsible for recruiting and managing a team, as well as overseeing on-the-ground consultants to drive specific outcomes in various states. Ideal candidates have previous experience building coalitions and executing proactive campaigns that challenge the status quo, create new market opportunities, and drive innovation. We are looking for team members who are mission-driven, collaborative, and adaptive, with an entrepreneurial drive and the ability to balance multiple projects and competing demands.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute campaigns in 5-10 priority states to drive demand for our technology, principally through laws and regulations that raise the bar for what is expected from an AMI  investment
  • Develop deep, strong and collaborative relationships with a variety of external stakeholders, including legislators, regulators, clean energy companies, environmental organizations, and other allies
  • Identify policy opportunities (primarily utility regulation, but also potentially legislation) related to our interests and lead the development of Utilidata’s policy positions, in close coordination with the Executive Team, External Affairs and Legal
  • Draft bill summaries, policy briefs, regulatory comments, analyses and presentations that clearly communicate Utilidata’s positions and summarize opportunities
  • Recruit and manage a team of policy and regulatory staff, setting clear goals and objectives for each team member, providing regular feedback, and motivating the team to succeed
  • Represent Utilidata as a member of various trade associations and membership groups
  • Collaborate with a variety of internal partners and communicate proactively and frequently, soliciting regular feedback and input to strengthen our policy outcomes
  • Be strategic and resourceful in deploying limited resources, including managing on-the-ground consultants

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of demonstrated success with state-based policy and regulatory advocacy, including with Public Utility Commissions, driving outcomes that challenge the status quo
  • Experience in the clean energy industry, including working knowledge of the regulatory landscape
  • Experience working for a for-profit, non-utility company
  • Experience building and leading an engaged and effective team of both employees and consultants
  • Excellent communications skills (written, verbal and presentation) that demonstrate an ability to convey a compelling story and communicate our strategies without jargon
  • Highly collaborative work style
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Enhanced Qualifications (Nice to Have)

  • Experience working remotely and/or as part of a team based across multiple locations
  • Experience recruiting and managing a team of employees based across multiple locations
  • Advanced degree in public policy, or related field
