Position Overview
The Tool/Die Technician is responsible for the installation, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of extrusion tooling used in HDPE pipe manufacturing. This Tool/Die Technician role plays a critical part in ensuring production efficiency, minimizing downtime during changeovers, and maintaining product quality standards.
Required Experience & Skills
• Strong mechanical aptitude and experience working with industrial equipment
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
• Experience with hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and lifting equipment
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
• Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment
• Familiarity with extrusion or plastic manufacturing processes preferred
• Knowledge of tooling alignment, calibration, and dimensional accuracy
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The Tool/Die Technician role includes:
• Perform tooling setup and changeovers on extrusion lines (dies, mandrels, sleeves, and related components)
• Remove, clean, inspect, and reinstall tooling according to production schedules
• Ensure proper alignment and installation to maintain product accuracy and quality
• Support line startups following tooling changes
• Maintain and inspect tooling to identify wear, defects, or damage
• Assist with preventative maintenance and tooling care
• Troubleshoot production issues such as wall thickness variation, ovality, and surface defects
• Collaborate with operators and supervisors during changeovers and production runs
• Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and proper lifting practices
• Maintain a clean and organized work area following 5S standards
• Track tooling usage and assist with inventory management and documentation
Preferred Experience
• Experience in HDPE pipe extrusion or plastic manufacturing environments
• Knowledge of die tooling, calibration systems, and vacuum tanks
• Understanding of pipe tolerances and quality requirements
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift and maneuver heavy tooling components
• Frequent standing, bending, and climbing around equipment
• Ability to work in environments with heat, noise, and moving machinery
