Summary:

The individual in this role has expertise in apparatus design, build, and integration and works closely with a team of hardware and software engineers to design, build, and validate various optical systems for neutral-atom quantum computers. The work is project-based, and the person in this role owns their project progress against department and company goals and may also mentor colleagues on several such projects.

 Responsibilities:

  • Refine specs of various optical systems or modules from R&D prototypes.
  • Standardize optical module designs by engineering it using industrial software including Autodesk inventor, Zemax, and COMSOL.
  • Set up and maintain test stations to validate standard optical modules.
  • Collect feedback on optical modules from end users.
  • Develop and de-risk critical optical components to enable next generation QPU.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in experimental physics or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong hands-on laboratory skills.
  • An established publication record in top journals or a demonstrable record of innovation and accomplishment, including patents or product development cycles.
  • Experience leading the design of scientific instruments and apparatus.
  • Deep domain expertise in the areas of optics, modulators, lasers, electronics, and ultra-high vacuum.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the highest ability to explain physical reasoning, design decisions, and experimental results.
  • The individual in this role has a deep interest in developing and commercializing quantum technologies and is a self-starter with previous experience working in a highly collaborative work environment.
