QuEra’s neutral atom qubits are captured, cooled, arranged, and entangled using laser beams, making laser light a critical resource for QuEra quantum computing and quantum simulation machines. We are seeking a laser scientist or engineer with a strong background in low-noise and high-power lasers to take on development and maintenance of laser systems that power our Quantum Data Center.

Key responsibilities:

  • Ensure high-uptime operations of existing laser systems critical for the running of QuEra machines. This will require working closely with laser system vendors and users on the QuEra team to develop and execute maintenance, monitoring and failure response processes.

  • Work with QuEra scientists and external vendors to develop laser system solutions to power future QuEra machines in a scalable way while meeting challenging technical specifications on power, linewidth, intensity noise, and stability.

  • Prototype, characterize and productize these solutions at the component and system levels.

  • Build optical infrastructure around the laser systems to control and deliver light to the QuEra machines.

Candidates should have:

  • An advanced degree in physics or engineering, or equivalent years of relevant industry experience

  • Hands-on experience, as user and as developer, of high-power continuous-wave laser systems

  • Hands-on experience with laser noise characterization

  • Hands-on experience with free-space optics

  • A self-starting, inventive attitude towards problem solving

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with application of laser systems in the AMO field

  • Experience managing supply chain vendors

  • Experience with continuous-wave non-linear frequency mixing, pulsed lasers, low-noise laser design, fiber lasers, fiber optic components, diode laser systems, or Ti:Sapph and other solid-state laser systems
