In 2008, a group of parents and community members recognized the unmet needs of teens and adults with developmental disabilities. Our Place was created to support teens and adults with disabilities so that they can live meaningful, productive, socially connected lives in their home community.  Our Place serves approximately 80 participants through an array of community-based, in-person and online programs.  As Program Leader, you’ll partner with their professional staff of eleven who put participants squarely at the center of all they do.

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Program Director, you’ll work closely with the team on developing and providing exceptional programs at Our Place and in the community.  You’ll lead a variety of programs focusing on fitness, healthy living, creative expression and vocational experiences.
 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Create and plan a meaningful, participant-focused curriculum of group activities and community outings.  
  • Lead a variety of programs focused on social skills development, creative/artistic expression, recreation, healthy living, cooking, gardening, literacy, STEM, music, vocational service and community exploration. 
  • Serve as an advisor for assigned participants by developing personal goals and plans and communicating with other members of the team on your participant’s behalf. 
  • Manage volunteers and substitute staff members who are assisting in the programs you are leading, ensuring they are effective and understand the goals for each participant.  
  • Produce supportive materials including schedules, visual supports and iPad applications as needed.  
  • Build supportive and respectful relationships with participants with an emphasis on serving as a role model.
  • Communicate with families as necessary to report on progress and set new goals for mentored participants.
  • Track progress towards goals and complete administrative tasks pertaining to your programs.
  • Assist in maintaining program content and descriptions.

Skills and Background: 

  • Patience and a desire to work with individuals who have developmental and intellectual disabilities.
  • 1-2 years’ experience minimum serving persons with disabilities in a human services realm such as therapeutic recreation, athletics, expressive arts, theatre, social services or education.
  • Degree or relevant coursework or training in human development, education, art therapy, recreational therapy or communications.
  • Strong teamwork, communication and effective time management skills.
  • Creativity and flexibility in working with groups.
  • High energy and resourcefulness to lead and motivate participants and volunteers.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint programs.
  • Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license and be willing to drive company van
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds regularly, work outdoors in various weather conditions and stand/walk for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint background check.

Anticipated Schedule:
40 hour week, full time.  Regular schedule is Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm. Year round.  Additionally:

  • Program Leaders work one Saturday evening per month from 5:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. for our Saturday Evening Socials.  You will be paid an additional stipend for these events.  
  • Program Leaders work our online Saturday socials every other month.  This is a time commitment of 1.5 hours and can be performed remotely.  Compensation time during the workweek is given to offset this time commitment.

Compensation and Benefits:
Salary $40,000+ per year, commensurate with experience.  Excellent benefits include:
