About This Opportunity

To ensure long term impact that is evidence based and leverages NRGI’s unique technical skills and local presence across resource-rich developing countries, NRGI’s new Learning and Impact Lead will provide strategic thinking, best practice advice, and oversight of NRGI’s monitoring, evaluation and learning activities. The Learning and Impact Lead will be responsible for: building a culture of learning in the organization; putting in place systems to track and understand our intended and unintended impacts; supporting teams to embed fit for purpose monitoring and learning tools as part of their work; and identifying opportunities for scalability and replicability to drive greater impact. This is an exciting opportunity for an impact-focused leader, with deep knowledge of and commitment to social and systems-level change and first-hand experience in the appropriate monitoring and learning tools to support this. The position will be central to NRGI’s shift to impact-centric work through politically savvy, locally led and adaptable approaches grounded in strong monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) mechanisms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • As Learning and Impact Lead, you will fully leverage all aspects of the monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) function to help program teams advance learning and the body of evidence-based knowledge that drives impact in natural resource governance and sustainable, inclusive development.
  • You will lead the development and implementation of NRGI’s MEL strategy and systems development, ensuring that they support the achievement of organizational objectives, which includes donor requirements.
  • You will oversee NRGI’s impact measurement, working with and managing evaluation partners and, using the resulting evidence, support program and project leads to utilize the information to maximize the achievement of project goals and continually enhance NRGI’s impact.
  • You will work collaboratively with colleagues to build their capacity to engage in monitoring, evaluation and learning as regular parts of their work.
  • You will build positive relationships with key external stakeholders, including donors.
  • You will act as an external ambassador for NRGI through networking and community building. You will connect the organization to the broader MEL community of practice to share our learning and benefit from the learning of other organizations and advancements in the field.
  • You will be able to motivate and inspire NRGI staff to value critical thinking, rigor, feedback and regular reflection on progress, with particular focus on learning for increased impact.
  • You will facilitate learning moments at key junctures in organizational cycles and tied to significant projects, initiating and developing strong, credible relationships internally and with key partners.
  • You will contribute to NRGI’s mid-strategy review, an exercise to test and confirm our existing theory of change, ask learning questions to help us test old and new assumptions, and update our theory of change based on people, power, and policy structure.

This role might be for you if……….

  • You have eight to ten years of directly relevant experience using a range of MEL tools (quantitative and qualitative) to solve system level problems through learning-centric approaches to program design and implementation.
  • You are passionate about supporting impact and have experience in coaching teams to bring about continuous improvement through systematic learning processes with an ability to link results and outcomes to activities and methods.
  • You can initiate and develop strong, credible relationships and influence staff across organizational levels as well as external partners at the project level.
  • You have experience in embedding learning in organizational culture through reflective processes as well as organizational incentives.
  • You are effective in multi-cultural communication, facilitation, training, and development.
  • You have experience working in a complex or pioneering environments, including supporting and developing opportunities for systemic change.
  • You have worked for and/or have an interest in not-for-profits/non-governmental organizations.
  • You can think conceptually and strategically over 3–5-year time horizons and have experience translating strategy into project and research design.
  • You have strong experience in writing and producing donor and/or stakeholder-centered reports, presentations, and content that summarizes quantitative analysis and incorporates data in qualitative narratives and stories.
  • You have excellent English language skills, both written and spoken; proficiency in French and/or Spanish is helpful.
