Position: Accountant – District Operations Coordinator
Location: Brisbane, QLD

Job type: Full Time, 38 hours/week
Salary range: AUD 80,000 – AUD 85,000

Our 2500+ Tax Consultants use the latest tools and technologies to prepare all types of tax returns, including individual, sole trader, partnership, trust, SMSF, and company returns. We also provide a broad range of small business accounting services, including bookkeeping, BAS preparation, entity setup (company, trust, SMSF), financial statement preparation, tax planning, and advice.

As an Accountant, you will prepare tax returns and BAS and provide accounting services relating to taxation and the financial affairs of individuals and small businesses. In addition, you will coordinate district activities by supporting tax preparation operations, delivering training, and mentoring staff to ensure consistent service standards and compliance with record-keeping and regulatory requirements.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducting full client interviews to gather, examine and verify financial records, source documents and supporting information for the preparation of accurate income tax returns and other lodgements.
  • Preparing income tax returns for individuals, sole traders, partnerships, trust (deceased estates), ensuring full compliance with the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 (Cth), the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (Cth) and Australian Taxation Office (ATO) rulings.
  • Preparing Business Activity Statements (BAS), Instalment Activity Statements (IAS), and other quarterly and annual taxation reports for small-business clients.
  • Liaising with the Australian Taxation Office on behalf of clients in relation to income tax, GST, PAYG, debt arrangements and other regulatory matters.
  • Reviewing tax returns prepared by other consultants in accordance with the District Manager’s plan, identifying errors, applying corrections and providing technical guidance on the relevant tax treatment), preparing for the lodgement of tax return Amendments, or Objections.
  • Implementing and maintaining internal control procedures relating to client confidentiality, record retention and compliance, in accordance with H&R Block’s policies, the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and Australian Privacy Principles.
  • Operating, maintaining and advising on the use of computer-based accounting and tax preparation systems, including H&R Block’s in-house tax software, to process client returns and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Determining and applying professional fees in accordance with H&R Block’s Schedule of Charges, processing client payments and ensuring daily reconciliation and banking of all monies received.
  • Maintaining current professional knowledge of Australian taxation law, accounting standards and ATO rulings through ongoing professional development, including H&R Block Continuing Professional Education.
  • Assisting the District Manager in overseeing day-to-day district operations, including recruitment, onboarding and coordinating workflow and ensuring staff adherence to company procedures.
  • Coaching, mentoring, and training administrative and accounting staff to maintain operational standards and improve performance.
  • Coordinating the delivery of H&R Block’s Income Tax Course in the district, and teaching classes.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • At least 2-3 years prior experience in tax preparation for individual and small business clients
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, taxation legislation, requirements
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify discrepancies and recommend financial solutions.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with clients, management, and staff.
  • Organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Skills and relevant experience delivering technical tax training
  • Ability to travel within the district (including the Sunshine Coast) and current driver’s license
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as required, particularly during tax season.

Role requirements:

  • Must have a current Driver’s license, access to a car and be able to visit offices in their District(s)

  • May be required to provide TTS (TAX TRAINING SCHOOL) training as an instructor as agreed upon with the DM

Relationships and reporting structure:
The District Operations Coordinator reports directly to the District Manager(s) in the district(s) they operate within.
